Whisk it Away with your KitchenAid Utility Whisk


The well-equipped kitchen must have at least one whisk, and probably several. Because we like to think ours is a  well-equipped kitchen, we have two. Possibly three. Maybe even four... Our previous utility whisk had a wooden handle, which lasted something like a year before splitting. It still functioned, though, after I wrapped the split handle with some bright copper wire I found around the shop. It even looked better than the bare wood, if you ask me. That lasted for fourteen or fifteen years before we had to replace it with a new KitchenAid Utility Whisk.


Description


A KitchenAid utility whisk looks exactly like what people envision when they hear the word: an egg-shaped nest of stainless steel wires in a springy, criss-cross pattern; all fastened together in a sturdy handle. Overall it's a bit more than 12" long, including about the 5-inch plastic handle. The wires, eight if I got the count right, bulge out about 3" in diameter at their widest point. A stainless ferrule at the handle end fixes the wires in place while strengthening the handle. The handle's printed with the corporate logo and has a hole at top end so you can hang it. It's dishwasher-safe, though in my experience it's easy to clean by hand. I whisk the water in the sink to a froth and it gets clean in the process.

Using the Whisk


I appreciate the whisk's heft and balance, because it's still comfortable to use even after twenty minutes to a half hour of stirring. The wire gauge is stiff enough to stand up to thick roux-based cheese sauces like those from my Mac & Cheese cookbook, while still delicate enough to whip egg and milk concoctions to a froth. After either one, it comes nice and clean. Of course this steel whisk shouldn't be used on non-stick cookware; you'll want a nylon or plastic whisk for any such pans.

The one problem I have is the whisk's size: a three-inch diameter means it's a little too large for a standard drawer, so we hang it on one of our already crowded racks. It's also a bit large for some of our small saucepans, though that's probably one reason why well-equipped kitchens have more than one whisk.

It's solid, well-designed and comfortable to use. A KitchenAid Utility Whisk ought to be in your drawer - or on your tool rack.
